Lesson Two
په هر چا خپل وطن کشمیر دے.
pu hăr chaa khpul watún kashmeer day.
For everyone his own country is Kashmir.
خپل عمل د لارې مل دے.
khpul amúl du láare mal day.
Your own deeds are with you on your path.
Lesson Three
په پردى لاس مار وژل هم ښۀ نۀ دی.
pu pradee laas maar wajzul hum khu nu dee.
Even a snake shouldn't be killed by another's hand.
د اُوښ غلا په ټيټه ملا نۀ کېږى.
du ookh ghlaa pu TéeTa mlaa nu kegee.
A camel can't be stolen with a bent back.
خپل څادر سره پښې غزوه
khpul tsaadúr sara khpe ghazawa.
Stretch your feet according to your cover.
Lesson Four
دانه دانه چې يوځائ شى غر ترې جوړ شى.
daana daana che yo zaay shee ghur tre joR shee.
A grain on a grain makes a mountain.
چې اُوښان ساتې نو دروازې به دنګې ساتې.
che ookháan saaté, no darwaaze ba dúnge saaté.
If you keep camels, then you should have tall doors.
Lesson Five
هغه يار چې بې وفا دے څۀ يار نۀ دے،
او هغه کار چې بې بقا دے څۀ کار نۀ دے.
hágha yaar che be wafáa day tsu yaar nu day,
aw hágha kaar che be baqáa day tsu kaar nu day.
That friend who is unfaithful is no friend at all,
And that work which is temporal is no work at all.
زهٔ په طمع تهٔ بې غمه.
zu pu túma tu be ghúma.
I am expectant and you don't care.
چې سر حیات وی ټوپۍ ډېرې
che săr hayáat wee Topúy Dere
If the head is living caps are many.
چې څهٔ کرې هغه به رېبې.
che tsu kare haghá ba rebe.
As you sow so shall you reap.
Lesson Six
خُدائ چې څۀ کړى، هغه ښۀ کړى.
khUdaay che tsu kRee, haghá khu kRee.
What God does, he does well.
څۀ ژرنده ورانه او څۀ دانې لمدې.
tsu jzrandá wraana aw tsu daané lumbde.
Partly the mill is broken, partly the grain is damp.
د غل په ږیره خس وی.
du ghul pu géera khus wee.
There's a straw in the thief's beard.
Lesson Seven
په پوښتنه پوښتنه سړے کابل ته رسيدے شى.
pu pokhtúna pokhtúna saRáy kaabúl ta rasedáy shee.
By asking and asking a man can reach Kabul.
خر چې د خر نه کم وى غوږ يې د پرې کولو وى.
khur che du khur na kum wee ghwug ye du pre kawulo wee.
If a donkey is less than a donkey it's ear should be cut.
الوتې مرغۍ په لاس نۀ راځى.
alwute marghúy pu laas nu raazee.
The bird that has flown can't come to the hand.
Lesson Eight
اول وخوره د ځان غوښې بيا وخوره د ښکار غوښې.
awál óokhora du zaan ghwákhe byaa óokhora du khkaar ghwákhe.
First eat the meat of yourself then eat the meat of the hunt.
دې ته به د چا پلار ټينګ شى!
de ta ba du chaa plaar Teeng shee!
Whose father can resist it!
هر څۀ ځى خو عادت نۀ ځى.
hăr tsu zee kho aadăt nu zee.
Everything leaves but not a habit.
په ظاهر لباس غلط د سړى مۀ شه
مېنځ يې ګوره له چغزې او له مټاکه.
pu zaahír libáas ghalát du saRée mu sha
menz ye góra la chughzé aw la muTáaka
Do not be fooled by the outer appearance of a man,
Look in the centre to see whether he is soft or hard.
Lesson Nine
چرګه زما يې او اګۍ دَ بل کره اچوې.
chúrga zmaa ye aw agúy du bul kára achawe.
You are my hen and lay eggs in someone else's house.
تۀ پردو غمونو وخوړې.
tu pradó ghumóono óokhoRe.
Someone else's sorrows consumed you.
د رحمان وېنا به هله در په ياد شى،
چې دې يو دېوال ته مخ بل ته دې شا شى.
du rahmáan wenaa bu hala dăr pu yaad shee,
che du yo deewáal ta mukh bul ta de shaa shee.
You will remember Rahman's advice,
When one wall is in front of you and one behind.
Lesson Ten
په خوله خوږه او په زړۀ کښې کږه.
pu kholá khwagá aw pu zRu ke kagá.
Sweet mouth, but crooked heart.
چې دَ خُدائ په چا نظر شى تورے خاورې ورته زر شى.
che du khUdáay pu chaa nazár shee tóre khaawre wăr-ta zur shee.
Black soil becomes gold for the one whom God looks at with favour.
زۀ رحمان چې غشے ولم خطا نۀ ځى.
په بغداد کښې مې کام ل کام ل پيران شته.
zu rahmáan che ghúshay wálum khatáa nu zee.
pu bUghdáad ke me kaamíl kaamíl peeráan shta.
I, Rahman don't miss when I shoot an arrow.
In Baghdad there are perfect, perfect pirs.
Lesson Eleven
چې چرته اوسې په خوئ به د هغو شې.
che chărta óse, pu khooy ba du haghó she
Your manners will be the same as those you live with.
ښۀ پوهېږم خو نۀ پوهېږم.
khu pohégum kho nu pohégum
I understand it will but don't understand it.
د ماشُوم په ژبه خپله مور پوهېږى.
du maashóom pu jziba khpúla mor pohégee.
A mother knows the sound of her own child's voice.
سړيتوب څۀ په دولت نۀ دے رحمانه!
بت د سرو زرو کۀ جوړ شى انسان نۀ دے.
saReetób tsu pu dawlat nu day rahmáana!
bUt du sro zuro ku joR shee insaan nu day.
Manliness is not found in wealth, Rahman!
Even if an idol is made from gold, it is not human.
په يو قدم تر عرشه پورې رسى
ما ليدلے دے رفتار د دروېشانو.
pu yo qadúm tur ársha pore rásee
maa leedulay day riftáar du darweshaano.
They reach God's throne in a single stride
I have witnessed the ways of Dervishes.
Lesson Twelve
مُفت شراب قاضى هم څښلى دى.
mUft sharáab qaazée hum skúlee dee.
Even a judge has drunk free alcohol.
پيشو د خُدائ د پاره منږک نۀ نيسى.
peeshó du khUdáay dupáara mungúk nu neesee.
A cat doesn't catch mice for God.
راتلل په اراده او تلل په اجازه.
raatlul pu iraada aw tlul pu ijaaza.
Coming requires intention, going requires permission.
کارغۀ د ښارو ګرځېدل زده کول،
خپل ګرځېدل ترې هم هېر شو. اوس په ټوپُونو ځى.
kaarghú du khaaró gurzedul zda kawul,
khpul gurzedul tre hum her sho. oos pu Topóono zee.
The crow was learning to walk like a myna bird,
and forgot his own way to walk. Now he goes in hops.
Lesson Thirteen
سودم ته شين دے.
sodúm ta sheen day.
It's clear towards Sodum.
تور سپے خړ سپے دواړه سپى دى.
tor spay khuR spay, dwáaRu spee dee.
Black dog, gray dog, both are dogs.
د ګيدړ د سلو کالُو ژوند نه د زمرى يوه ورځ ژوند ښۀ دے.
du geedúR du súlo kaalo jzwund du zmarée yuwáwruz jzwund khu day.
One day of a lion's life is better than one hundred years of a jackal.
خوب خندا په بې غمۍ کېږى، رحمانه.
چې په زړۀ يې د يار غم وى څۀ به خوب څۀ به خندا که؟
khob handáa pu be ghumúy kégee, rahmáana
che pu zRu ye du yaar ghum wee, tsu khob tsu ba khandaa ka?
Sleep and laughter is found where there is an absence of sorrow, Rahman.
Where there is sorrow for a friend in one's heart, how can one sleep or laugh?
Lesson Fourteen
چې ځې ځې ابازو له به راځې.
che ze ze abaazó la ba raazé.
However far you go you will come back to Abazai.
هله به خبر شې چې تارو جبې له ورشې.
hála ba khabúr she che táaroo jíbe la wăr-she.
When you go to Taru Jabba you will know what to do.
خپل بد د ولو مينځ وى.
khpul bud du wúlo menz wee.
Your own weakness lies between the shoulder blades.
نېکى برباد ګُناه لازم.
nekee barbáad gUnáa laazím.
Goodness went in vain and I am blamed of sin.
چې په زړۀ کښې دې څۀ عیب نۀ وى رحمانه
ښُکلې مخ ته په کتو کښې ګُناه نشته.
che pu zRu ke de tsu ayb nu wee rahmáana
khkÚle mukh ta pu kató ke gUnáa níshta.
If there is no flaw in your heart Rahman,
Then it's no sin to look at a pretty face.
Lesson Fifteen
دې کښې به يې خیر وى.
de ke ba ye khayr wee.
There will be good in it.
دَ پښتُون يوه خبره وى.
du pukhtóon yuwá khabúra wee.
Pukhtuns stick to their word.
شپه چې تېره شى، خبره هېره شى.
shpa che téra shee, khabúra héra shee.
The night is gone, the talk is forgotten.
مۀ کوه په ما وبه شى په تا.
mu kawa pu maa, óo-ba-shee pu taa.
Don't do it to me, it will be done to you.
کر د ګُلو کړه چې سيمه دې ګُلزار شى.
اغزى مۀ کره په پښو کښې به دې خار شى.
kar du gÚlo kRa, che séema de gUlzáar shee.
aghzée mu-kara pu khpo ke ba de khaar shee.
Grow flowers to make your surroundings blossom.
Don't sow thorns, they will become thorns in your feet.
چې الله درسره مل نۀ وى، رحمانه،
کۀ لښکرې درسره وى يک تنها يې.
che aal`laa dăr-sara mal nu wee, rahmáana,
ku lakhkúre dăr-sara wee, yăk tanháa ye.
If God is not your companion, Rahman,
Even if you have an army you are all alone.
Lesson Sixteen
عقل دَ بې عقلو نه زده کېږى.
áqul du be aqlo na zda kégee.
Wisdom can be learned from fools.
دَ خېشکو نسوار دى، په وروستو زور کوى.
du kheshko naswáar dee, pu wróosta zor kawée.
The naswar of Kheshko has its effects later.
شاګرد ته ټول چل ونه ښايه، يو ترې پټ ساته.
shaagúrd ta Tol chalóona khaaya, yo tru puT saata.
Teach a student everything, keep one thing hidden.
رحمان هسې بې وقُوف سوداګر نۀ دے
چې دَ دين متاع بدله په دينار کا.
rahmáan háse be waqóof sodagár nu day
che de deen mutáa badúla pu deenaar kaa.
Rahman is not so stupid a merchant
As to exchange religion's wealth for money.
Lesson Seventeen
کله کله سړے د شېطان هم منى.
kala kala saRáy shetáan hum munée.
Sometimes a person should obay Satan.
يو خوا ډانګ دے بل خوا پړانګ دے.
yo khwaa Daang day, bul khwaa pRaang day.
On one side there is stick on the other side a leopard.
د ستړو ځائ شهباز ګړه ده.
du stuRo zaay shabáaz gáRa da.
The tired ones' place is Shabaz Gara.
پردے جنګ نيم اختر دے.
pradáy jang neem akhtár day.
Other people's quarrels are half a festival.
حُجره نۀ اخلم خو شپه په کښې تېروم.
hUjrá nú-akhlum, kho shpa pu ke terawúm.
I am not buying the hujra, but spending the night in it.
Lesson Eighteen
پردے کټ تر نيمې شپې وى.
pradáy kaT tur néeme shpe wee.
Someone else's bed is only good till half way through the night.
اولاد چې نيازبين شى نو نۀ دَ دين شى او نۀ دَ سادين شى.
aawláad che nyaazbéen shee no nu de deen shee aw nu du shaadéen shee.
When a child is spoiled he becomes neither religious nor a labourer.
پردى نۀ خپلېږى.
pradee nu khpulégee.
Outside folk never become relatives.
کۀ غر لوئ دے، خو په سر يې لار ده.
ku ghur looy day, kho pu săr ye laar da.
Even if the hill is big, there is a way to the top.
چې رښتيا راځى، دروغو به کلى وران کړى وى.
che rikhtyaa raazée, darógho ba kUlee wraan kuRee wee.
Before truth comes, lies will have ruined the villages.
Lesson Nineteen
دَ سحر ورک چې ماښام کور ته راشى نو ورک نۀ دے.
du sahár wruk che maakháam kor ta ráashee no wruk nu day.
What is lost in the morning that shows up in the evening is not lost.
چې خُدائ يې نۀ کړى پير بابا به يې څۀ کړى.
che khUdáay ye nu kRee peer baabaa ba ye tsu kRee.
If God doesn't do it, then what can Pir Baba do about it?
د پردى کلى په صبا څوک نۀ پوهېږى.
du pradée kulee pu sabáa tsok nu pohégee.
No one knows the dawn rituals of a foreign village.
اور له راغله د کور مېرمن شوه.
or la ráaghla du kor mermán shwa.
She came to get a burning coal and became mistress of the house.
څنګه حال دے؟
د دوؤ ښځو د خاوند نه مې ښۀ حال دے.
tsunga haal day?
du dwu`o khuzo khaawánd na me khu haal day.
How are you?
I'm better off than a man with two wives.
Lesson Twenty
دَ سحر په بانګ کښې مې نوے ټپه واورېده.
du sahár pu baang ke me níway Tapa waawreda.
I heard a new song in the morning call to prayer.
نمر په ګوته نۀ پټېږى.
nwar pu góota nu puTegee.
The sun cannot be hidden by a finger.
د دروغو مزل لنډ وى.
du darógho mazúl lunD wee.
The distance of untruth is short.
عقل څۀ کړې بخت ترې وغواړه رحمانه
عقلمند د بختورو غلامان وى.
áqul tsu kRe bakht tru óoghwaaRa rahmáana
aqulmúnd du bakhawúro ghUlaamáan wee.
What will you do with wisdom? Ask for luck Rahman.
The wise are slaves of the lucky.
Lesson Twenty-One
نۀ په مينه مړېدل شته نۀ په مال
نۀ په عُمر څوک مړېږى نۀ په سوال.
nu pu méena maRedul shta nu pu maal
nu pu Úmar tsok maRégee nu pu swaal.
There is no satisfaction in love, nor by things,
Not by age are people filled, nor by begging.
د باران نه تښتېدم د ناوې لاندې مې شپه شوه.
du baaráan na tukhtedúm du naawé laande me shpa shwa
I was getting out of the rain and ended up spending the night under a drain-pipe.
په دُنيا مۀ نازېږئ خلقه!
د شاه جهان بادشاه نه پاتې شول تختُونه.
pu dUnyáa mu-naazegey khalqa!
du shaah jihaan baadsháa páat shwul takhtóona.
Don't love the world, Oh people!
King Shah Jehan has left the throne.
Lesson Twenty-Two
چې يارانه په شلتالو شوه نو ما نه پاتې ده.
che yaaraana pu shultaaló shwa no maa na paate da.
If friendship is for a peach then I can't live with it.
دوست له دومره قوت مۀ ورکوه چې برابرى درسره وکړى.
dost la doomra qUwwát mu wărkawa che băraabăree dăr-sara óokRee.
Don't give that much power to a friend that they can become equal to you.
هر چا سره پنج، خو يار اشنا سره نۀ پنج.
hăr chaa sara panj, kho yaar aashnáa sara nu panj.
Compete with everyone but not with friends and companions.
د کم عقل دوست نه هوښيار دُشمن ښۀ وى.
du kum áqul dost na ookhyáar dUshmáan khu wee.
The wise enemy is better than a stupid friend.
هندُو د يار د پاره غټه غوښه خوړلې ده.
hindóo du yaar dupaara, ghaTa ghwakha khoRúle da.
For a friend a Hindu has eaten beef.
Lesson Twenty-Three
ورورى خورى به کوُو خو حساب کتاب تر مېنځه.
wróree khorée ba kawóo kho hisáab kitáab tur menza.
We will be like brothers and sisters but will keep accounts between us.
دا ګز او دا میدان.
daa gaz aw daa maydáan.
This the yardstick and this the open ground.
پښتُون سل کاله پس بدل واخستو او ویې وئيل چې زر مې واخستو.
pukhtoon sil kala pas badál wáaghisto aw we wayul [oo-ye-wayul] che zur me waaghisto.
A Pukhtun took revenge after a hundred years and said, "I took it quickly."
په زور کلى نۀ کېږى.
pu zor kúlee nu kegee.
Community is not created by force.
ښځې له يا کور دے يا ګور دے.
khuze la yaa kor day yaa gór day.
For the woman either the house or the grave.
Lesson Twenty-Four
چې بل ته کُوهے کنى، هغه پخپله پکښې پرېوځى.
che bul ta ko`ay kunee, haghá pukhpúla pu ke preóozee.
The one who digs a well for another, will himself fall in it.
د خپلو نه پردى ښۀ وى. د پردو نه اپريدى ښۀ وى.
du khpulo na pradee khu wee. du pradó na aapreedee khu wee.
Outsiders are better than relatives, and Afridis are better than outsiders.
د تورې پرهر به روغ شى خو د ژبې پرهر نۀ روغيږى.
du tóore parhar ba rogh shee kho du jzúbe parhar nu roghégee.
The wound of the sword can be healed, but the tongue's wound won't be healed.
چې مرګ وينى، تبې ته رضا شى.
che murg weenee, túbe ta razáa shee.
If he sees death, he will be satisfied with a fever.
Lesson Twenty-Five
ژوندے ځان په زمکه ښخ کړه لکه تخم
کۀ لوئى غواړې د خاورو په مقام شه.
jzwundáy zaan pu zmúka khukh kRa lúka tÚkhum
ku looyee ghwaaRe, du khaawro pu maqáam sha.
Plant yourself alive, like a seed in the ground
If you desire greatness, be in the place of dust.
اتفاق کښې برکت وى.
itifáaq ke barakát wee.
There is blessing in unity.
چرته ډب وى هلته ادب وى
chărta Dub wee hálta adúb wee.
Where there is beating there is obedience/manners.
د اُوښ په شا سپو وخوړم.
du ookh pu shaa spo óokhoRum.
I was bitten by dogs while sitting on the back of a camel.
Lesson Twenty-Six
دَ املوکو په تول کښې راغلے دے.
du aamlóoko pu tol ke raaghúlay day.
It came in the weighing of persimmons.
پيشو خلق په اوله شپه وژنى.
peesho khalaq pu awála shpa wujznee.
People kill a cat on the first night.
څۀ مو رانۀ کړل خو ما هم درته ټول مُونځونه بې اودسه کړى دى.
tsu mU raa-nu-kRul kho maa hum dăr-ta Tol moonzóona be awdása kúRee dee.
You didn't give me a thing, but I also have done all the prayers without ablution.
Lesson Twenty-Seven
زمُونږ دومره قِسمت چرته دے؟
zmoong dóomra qismút chărta day?
Where would be so much luck for us?
چې اختر تېر شى نکريزی په دیوال اوتپه.
che akhtár ter shee nakréezee pu deewáal óotapa.
When the festivities have ended, henna is pasted on the wall.
هر ز نده چې د مرده په قبر ورشى،
دومره بس دے نصيحت په دې دُنيا.
hăr zindá che du mUrdá pu qúbur wăr-shee,
dóomra bas day naseehút pu de dUnyáa.
Any living person who sees a grave,
For him this advice is enough.
کۀ هزار هزار پشتۍ ورله څوک ورکړى
بې بُنياده دے بُنياد د دې دُنيا.
ku hazáar, hazáar pushtúy wăr-la tsok wăr-kRee
be bUnyáada day bUnyáad du de dUnyáa.
Even if someone gives thousands and thousands of supports,
The foundation of this world is baseless.
